"Better Quality of Life"

Your local electric cooperative is a not-for-profit organization established by local citizens to serve the membership. When you become a member, you share in the benefits and responsibilities associated with the cooperative. The people who share in these benefits are your neighbors, friends and family from around the area.

Benefits of membership include a better quality of life through the dependable delivery of "at cost" electric service, the return of margins through the retirement of capital credits, local control and direction of the cooperative and personal attention to your electric service needs.

Responsibilities of membership include voting for candidates nominated to the Board of Directors, staying informed on the condition of your cooperative and when possible, accepting an active role by serving as a board member.

While twelve board members are responsible for the direction of the cooperative, the general manager is entrusted to oversee the direction. Daily functions of your cooperative are the responsibility of department managers, staff and employees.

Each year, your cooperative holds an Annual Meeting of the Members. The meeting is conducted as a means of informing the members on the financial condition of the cooperative and status of projects that took place throughout the year. The meeting rotates from the Mound City, Iola and Girard area each year. These areas also serve as office and warehouse locations for the Heartland REC service area.

Your cooperative provides electric service into eleven counties in southeast Kansas. Our 39 dedicated employees provide customer service to approximately 11,000 services over 3,600 miles of distribution line. Meters average 2.8 for every mile of line.

The cooperative offers additional values of membership including electric water heater and heat pump rebates, whole-house surge protection, a standby generation switch, an exclusive cooperative Power Plus VISA, and much more. Membership values offered by your cooperative are designed to make life safer and a little more comfortable. Your cooperative is committed to providing exceptional electric service and superior membership value.
